Few days compare to the racing on offer at Caulfield and Randwick this Saturday, with the Caulfield Cup and The Everest set to take centre stage. Whilst Warmonger will fly the flag in the feature at Caulfield, we’ll be represented with chances in other key stakes races this weekend.
Femminile steps out in the 2000m Group 3 Ethereal Stakes, a key lead up for the Oaks next month. She appreciated the rise to 1800m last start with a competitive performance against the boys and is expected to start to really hit her straps now over a staying journey. She’s a very clean winded filly and any rain won’t worry her!

Saturday’s 2400m Group 1 Caulfield Cup has long been Warmonger’s aim since his dominant Queensland Derby victory. He showed more than expected on return when finishing 4th in the Makybe, and perhaps was a little underwhelming with the edge off him in the Turnbull. His recovery however was very good, and all indicators show the Price Kent team that he’s crying out for the staying test he’ll be met with on Saturday. A wide draw adds to his task, but he’ll present in great order.
Warmonger finished 4th in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes on return.

In Sydney, Athabascan will take part in the opener on Everest Day, with the 2600m Group St Leger Stakes offering up an opportunity for him to turn his form around. The O’Shea & Charlton stable has been delighted with him all the way through the preparation, which through unfavourable circumstances on race day hasn’t been reflected in the form guide. His run on speed in the Metrop will have toughened him up and now with a soft draw on Saturday, he gets his chance to hit the line well before heading off to the Melbourne Cup.

Group 1 winner Lady Laguna is ready to make her second return of the spring in the 1200m Group 3 Sydney Stakes following an untimely virus. She got her campaign back on track in a high-quality trial at Randwick last week and has continued to please in the lead up. Barrier 18 of 18 is far from ideal, particularly when logic says she will improve for Saturday’s outing, but she’s a very honest mare who can give her owners a sight provided she’s afforded some luck in running. It’s hardly a shame to have a fresh horse ready for the back end of the carnival, and we’re excited to see what’s in store for her.
Lady Laguna finished 2nd in her Group & Listed trial at Randwick.
