Another 3200m test for Selino

The Chris Waller trained 8yo Selino had a good autumn preparation, returning to the track after a lengthy spell due to injury.

With a few runs under his belt to build up his fitness, he fought on well in the Sydney Cup and showed what a competitive stayer he is. He then headed down to Melbourne to run in the Andrew Ramsden over 2800m, where he was again competitive, finishing 5th behind top horses like White Marlin and Lunar Flare, who will now head towards the Melbourne Cup.

Selino finishes 5th in the 2023 Andrew Ramsden at Flemington (coming on the outside).

Chris Waller said post race “He ran a really good race. He needed something to take him into the race a little bit better as he had to do a lot of work from a long way out, but still grinded away strongly to the line.”

A Sydney Cup winner in 2021, Selino is yet to return to the winners stall, but Saturday’s Brisbane Cup presents as his best opportunity since to do so. He will be back out to 3200m and Nash Rawiller is booked to ride at 57.5kg. He has drawn barrier 13.

“It is a big field of 16 and obviously we will be hoping to see him switch off and find some cover. The key is staying the distance, then getting clear running and momentum from the 600m mark and not being held up. Therefore, I won’t be worried about where he is early in terms of how far back he is, as long as he finds cover and settles because he is not the easiest of horses to ride.

With cover, he certainly is better off so he will be in the second half of the field no doubt and closer to the back, but getting that first half of the race right is so important for any horse, especially him.” reported Waller in preparation for Saturday’s race.
