Named after the Melbourne suburb, Eaglemont was most impressive in winning his first race in Australia on Sunday at Ballarat. The six length victory over 1600m not only confirmed the changes that can occur with European imports in their second racing preparation, but confused most of his connections in winning with such authority over a short journey.
When purchased from the Arqana Breeze Up sales by OTI, with advice from Hubie de Burgh and Joseph O’Brien, the dream was that Joseph would bring him to the Melbourne Spring Carnival as a 4yo in 2021. Like most dreams however, that didn’t eventuate. After a couple of placings in strong form races, he finally won his maiden as a 3yo over 2150m at Dundalk. It was then decided to send him to Australia.
His first two preparations under Ciaron Maher and David Eustace’s guidance was so-so, despite a city placing. During his time in Australia, he was gelded and given a long spell before returning to work in October. The impact of the break, acclimatisation and patient build up, combined with his natural ability, lead to Sunday’s victory.

The Maher/Eustace stable have clearly done a wonderful job to get the now 5yo back racing so well. But they, like the owners, are now confused over the ideal distance range for the horse’s future. No doubt for his next run, he will stay at 1600m, however his breeding on both the stallion and dam sides indicates he should be competitive up to 3200m. Time will tell, but for now, his owners can look forward to some very exciting race days.
