Sometimes it’s best to let the performance and style of a horse speak for itself. Such is the case here. While Toregene has all the physical attributes of a classic filly (in itself, most appealing), it was her performances in her trials that caught the attention of OTI and Matthew Williams, and subsequently led to her acquisition for both parties.
In brief, she won her first trial circling the field on the turn. Her second trial was won after sitting in behind the leaders and then pulling around them. While the way she won both trials showed racing versatility, it was the ease of each win, accompanied by her sectional times, that made her so impressive. Her last 400m in her first trial was ran in 22.0secs, while she then ran a remarkable 10.7 second last 200m in her second trial.
Toregene, a dark bay 3yo filly, is from the proven race and breeding mare, Starguru. A winner of eight races, both her foals to get to the races have won. Toregene is looking to continue that unblemished record. Her sire, Mongolian Khan is one of New Zealand’s most prolific staying stallions.
Toregene arrives in Australia tomorrow and will continue in work in the hope we can get her to the races in April, and then to stakes level as a three-year-old. She should then go onto to have a successful career as an older horse in the hope we can continue to grow her broodmare value.
On what we have seen thus far, she has every chance of fulfilling those hopes and dreams.
